One of the most iconic landmarks of Nelspruit is about to be given a fresh new look in the hope that it can be turned into an alluring tourist attraction.
Anyone living in the city, or who has passed through a few times, is quite familiar with the Eye of Nelspruit. It is an eye catching sight (pardon the pun), and in the past it has been a popular spot for rebellious teenagers and creative photographers who are looking for a unique sight.
Situated on top of a koppie, overlooking a sprawling city that is constantly on the move, the Eye of Nelspruit is set to become the place to be, offering both tourists and locals a real, exciting experience.
The Nelspruit Local Tourism Organisation is in charge of the project and is not only negotiating the new look of the attraction but they are also in talks with the council to improve the security set up around the attraction. It is no secret that the area has become notorious over the years for criminal behaviour, but all of that is set to change in the coming months.
Not only is there talk of a camera being set up to improve security, but a regular guard and better security fencing is also in the works.
The Nelspruit Local Tourism Organisation has also stated that they intend to create a visitors book for those visiting to leave a record of their details.
In its current state the attraction is not in the best of conditions and when the time comes to give it a makeover, the attraction will be given a fresh coat of paint, more safety features so that it can be safely climbed, and a place to take selfies.
The attraction is also going to become an educational feature, as information tables will be set up around the safety rails. These information tables will point out the city’s features which can be viewed from Eye.
The actual eye won’t be the only attraction as there is also plans to have a hiking trail to be set up. The hiking trail will be the perfect place to get outdoors and enjoy a little downtime out in nature.
Ablution facilities and gardens around the Eye will also be set up, making it a must visit place for those who’d like to see a different side of our amazing town.

When on holiday or just away for the weekend nobody want to think of illness or accidents. But accidents happen and people do get sick so it’s good to know where to go for the best medical care. Nelspruit has several emergency services centres to choose from, all offering super care. And the town also has a number of ambulance services available.
At Nelspruit Lodge, we have a list of all of Nelspruit’s emergency services and to give you a little more insight into where you can medical assistance when you are new to the town.
Urgent Care
Urgent Care opened its doors in 2014 and is centrally located. It was opened in conjunction with an Urgent Care run ER facility at Medi-Clinic. The idea of Urgent Care is to handle all kinds of non-life threatening illness or injuries. The facility is open between 8h00 am and 8h30 pm every day, and that includes weekend and public holidays. The facility is easily accessible for both patients and emergency vehicles. The medical facility is accessible for young and old, and it caters to patients in wheelchairs. The facility provides the convenience of a pharmacy, x-ray rooms and a laboratory in the same building. The general practitioners at Urgent Care are proficient in handling most cases that are not life-threatening. At this facility, there is no need for appointments.
Nelmed Medi-Cross
Nelmed Group Practice is part of the Medi-Cross Group and offers non-stop medical services. At Nelmed they offer services by appointment and they also assist walk in illness or emergency patients. The doctors at this facility also do not offer life threatening services but are equipped to assist with lacerations, illnesses and fractures. The facility has a pharmacy on the premises, a laboratory, as well as an x-ray department. Nelmed is open seven days a week from 7h00 in the morning to 8h00 at night. They have their own parking area which includes parking for the disabled as well as ambulances. In the same building, there is a dentist, optician, orthopaedic surgeon and ear institute. These facilities are open from Monday to Friday only.
WeCare
WeCare is another modern medical facility in Nelspruit that offers excellent medical services. Their facility is conveniently situated in the Busamed Lowveld Hospital. They established the care centre in 2012. The practice is open 08h00 to 18h00 from Monday to Friday and on Saturdays from 8h00 to 12h00. The patients visiting this facility need to make appointments unless it is an emergency consultation. WeCare has a laboratory and orthotist on the premises and an x-ray department and pharmacy is within walking distance. At WeCare they are capable of taking care of minor lacerations and fractures as well as doing child immunizations. They also offer diabetic management at their facility.

Nelspruit and its natural surrounding areas are filled to the brim with natural attractions of all kinds. When staying at our Nelspruit accommodation, guests are in the perfect place from which to explore mountains, hiking trails, dams and caves.
If caving is your thing, a day trip on the Panorama Route will bring you to the famous Echo Caves. This National Monument can be found in the Molopong valley which is situated near Ohrigstad.
The Echo caves were discovered in the 1920’s, by the owner of the farm Klipfontein, while he was searching for water in the area. After searching the land in and around his farm extensively, he came upon the caves and saw that his cattle had already found the caves and the water source. The caves are among some of the oldest of their type in the world and are now a Historical Monument.
The best, and safest, way to explore the caves are by signing up for a guided day trip. Of all the limestone caves, the Echo caves are not that well known, so a visit there is rather a personal affair, sometimes making it just you and the guide on the tour.
Early History and Cave Features
The Echo Caves have been a shelter for humans since the Middle Stone Age. San rock engravings can still be viewed within the caves and can be seen alongside beautiful, ancient rock formations which have taken centauries to form.
The caves were given their name by the local people who used to use the stalactites as a drum which served as an early warning system when Swazi tribes were approaching. The caves are about 40km in depth, and the sound from drumming on the stalactites can be heard throughout the caves. The caves have an eerily feel when the stalactites are drummed and your guide will give the experience.
Today the stalactites and stalagmites can be comfortably viewed from walkways with staircases where needed as well as railings for your safety. Electric lights are fitted throughout the guided tour areas.
The height in one of the rooms is an amazing 60 meters and the caves also boast a chamber 100 meters long. Guides will take you 2 km into the caves and en route you will have the opportunity to view the stunning cave features of stalagmites, stalactites, columns and flowstones.
The Echo Caves have not been thoroughly walked through as yet and so we can only surmise where they end. Some think it ends close to the Strijdom Tunnel, but that is just a calculated guess. For those of us that are not claustrophobic, special tours can be arranged to go deeper into the caves.

A lot of our visitors ask us about Nelspruit’s nightlight. It’s only natural that when visiting a new town, or revisiting it for that matter, that you will want to spend at least one night out on the town!
Now, Nelspruit has never been overly well known for having much of an exciting nightlife. In fact, many a young person would describe the town as quite dull. But we disagree. There is plenty to do in the evenings when in Nelspruit and the surrounding areas, especially if you are a foodie.
So, to help you guide yourself around our ever growing little city, we are going to share some of the best places to spend an evening out.
- Picasso’s
Okay, so it’s not in Nelspruit. It’s a 25 minute drive away in the chic town of White River, just up the mountain in the cooler, fresh air. But Picasso’s is an amazing place to spend your evening. The vibe is jumping, the people are friendly and the food is Mexican. What more could you ask for? Picasso’s has been able to perfectly balance that city feeling with the laidback Lowveld atmosphere to create a relaxed eatery that is unique to our part of the world. The menu is flavourful and affordable, making it the perfect place to relax and grab a spicy bite.
3. Gumtreez
While in White River, let’s stay there for a bit. Just across the road from Picasso’s, you’ll find Gumtreez. Aptly named after the stunning Blue Gum Trees that sway in the breeze, sheltering the outdoor dining area, this eatery is more of a bar than a restaurant but the food is to die for. Instead of visiting in the evening, it might be best to pop in on a Saturday afternoon, and just soak up that quiet, relaxed feeling you’ll enjoy the moment you walk in.
4. Kuzuri
Just down the road from Nelspruit Lodge lies the upmarket, fashionable restaurant Kuzuri. Known for its stylish ambience and exciting menu, Kuzuri has been a favourite among many a local diner looking for a more formal and romantic atmosphere. It’s literally a walk away although we suggest driving as you’ll be so full of good food, walking back won’t sound like such a romantic option!
5. The Jock
This pub and grill will come up time and again on all sorts of lists. It is a much-loved Lowveld favourite and its location, as well as its chilled vibe, makes it incredibly popular among both young and old locals. The menu here is hearty and you can never think that they are anything but over generous with their portions. It’s a great place to treat yourself to lunch while at night it’s the best place to have a drink.
